When I stepped into the apartment I had a sickly feeling like something was amiss, all the lights were on including the entrance way and the upper hall. The TV was blaring, the stereo on top of the fridge was blaring and all the doors stood open upstairs, except Harley’s. I hung up my coat and slipped off my shoes setting them on the shoe rack. I turned off the stereo and headed to the living room to turn the TV down.
I nearly jump out of my skin when Harley screamed blue bloody murder. I raced into the room to find Harley entwined in another nightmare, only this one was like nothing I’d ever witnessed before. His arms and legs were thrashing, his teeth were clenched together like a snarling animal, his face was glowing red and his clothing was heavily drenched in sweat. He screamed out for a second time but his throat was so raw that it came out painfully strangulated. He gasped for air as he yelled no continually. I couldn’t stand by and watch anymore.
“Harley,” I said softly, placing my hand on his shoulder. “Harley, open your eyes, you’re dreaming. It’s just a dream, Angel, no one can hurt you.”
Harley flayed out slamming his hand against my chest, fisting the front of my shirt pulling at me until the buttons gave way and my shirt ripped open. His other arm drew back and I knew what was about to come. As his fist flew towards my face, my hand clamped around it and I fell back on my ass from the force.
Jumping to my feet I grabbed his arms and held him down as I shouted, “Harley, wake up! Wake up!”
Harley’s body stilled as he took in a huge gasp of air and opened his eyes wide, with a grave look on his face, panting helplessly. His eyes darted around the room, his hands clasped onto my forearms.
“Is he gone?” he asked, worried. His voice was irritated and raw.
“It’s over…it’s over. There’s no one here but you and me,” I assured him.
Closing his eyes, his lips quivered as tears escaped, trailing into his hairline at his temple. I dropped to my knees beside him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders and pressing my lips to his forehead. He was a drunken mess and I had to blame myself for that. I felt terrible.
“Are you sure we’re alone?”
“I’m sure,” I told him. “I won’t let anyone get near you, I promise.”
“It was so real,” he choked. “I remembered everything from that last night. I thought I was going to die. It wouldn’t have bothered him if I’d died that night…Did you know I made my peace with God? I was so sure I’d fade away before someone found me. The ropes were tied so tight I could barely breathe, my chest hurt so bad. I kept drifting in and out of consciousness. Then he came home…and I wished I’d died.”
“Let me get you some water,” I said, rising to my feet.
